Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young teenager. Ford started acting in her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a month, she decided that it wasn't for her. Ford was then able to apply to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies that were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
